Kundalini Yoga for beginners: how difficult is it really?

Writer's picture: Louise LuiggiLouise Luiggi

Answering truthfully: extremely challenging!

For the majority, they run away after the first class. Some even don't wait until the end. Running away is a very typical response because everything about a first kundalini class feels uncomfortable - physically, emotionally, mentally.

It feels similar to being in a situation where you are facing teachers, colleagues, family and friends, and hearing about all your shortcomings, imperfections, and areas for improvement, except that the only voice you hear is your own. Kundalini leads you to a place where you come face to face with yourself, including both the positive and negative aspects, strengths, and weaknesses. It can be uncomfortable to have your vulnerabilities exposed, causing many to avoid this confrontation. So they run away.

Should the novice choose to come back, believing that the second attempt will be simpler, especially if they work on those challenging poses and breathing exercises at home, they will be in for a shock. Every class is fresh, different and possibly even more demanding than the last. The only blissful reprieve comes during the long relaxation at the end of the session, and yet even this comfortable moment can be disturbed by a surge of emotion suddenly rising to the surface seemingly out of nowhere. Tears are common for beginners.

Not a particularly brilliant sales pitch for my Kundalini classes so far!

There must be a reason why Kundalini Yoga is so difficult.

Many stories depict overcoming difficulties and adversity to achieve great success, but these narratives are typically associated with a select few individuals, like elite athletes or extraordinary individuals.

Kundalini, however, is a difficult challenge that can be overcome by everyone, young and old, man or woman, yoga experts and complete beginners....

The secret lies in our minds, which is why it feels so hard. Once you grit your teeth and make the decision to change habits and transform your life, Kundalini starts to feel more like a supportive friend.

Kundalini Yoga encourages you to adjust your breathing patterns, to re-build your shattered nervous system, and confront the habits and lifestyle choices that have compromised your physical and mental well-being for years. And so it's understandable that this process may seem difficult! No wonder your ego resists, screaming NO! When you make a point of setting aside your ego before engaging in your practice, the kriyas, breathwork, and meditations may not become easier, but you approach them with acceptance rather than resistance.

So what are the benefits of all this difficulty?

A regular practice of Kundalini Yoga will first of all bring confidence back into your being. You will feel empowered and ready to tackle life with all its ups and downs and challenges. This is because your navel point is stimulated and strengthened (this is the special pain and where some of the difficulty lies, particularly as many of us have a very weak core)

Anxiety and stress diminishes as you gain mastery of your breath, which in turn controls the mind.

Self-awareness, as well as awareness of others and your relationship to both, expands and grows, bringing improved communication and inner peace.

By uniting your known earthly Self with your Divine eternal essence, you achieve wholeness and balance as a human being. This union enables you to navigate through life with grace, humility, happiness, and health, making your presence on Earth lighter.

Personally, I believe that the difficulties faced in a Kundalini class are most definitely worth it!

I'd love to hear about your beginner experience of Kundalini Yoga. How difficult do you find it? Does it get easier?
