Unlocking the Power of Self-Commitment: 8 Habits Worth Cultivating for Your Personal Growth

Writer: Louise LuiggiLouise Luiggi

Life is given to you to experience life, not to experience traumas, and not to be wasted in games. We can live our entire life on automatic, but that is not living, that is surviving.

Remembering that life is precious and a gift, makes it simpler to cultivate self-discipline as a regular practice. In our current culture, we have lost the capacity to do this, as we are primarily focused on pursuing our desires and resisting anything that challenges our self-perception.

We need practices that give us the habit to select our habits - to accept or reject the impulses of our mind and emotions according to how they serve us and our consciousness.

We are not trained as children to have dignity, self-respect and most importantly self-love which is why we get caught in patterns of emotions and thoughts that are fearful, angry, impulsive or fanciful. We mistake the ego for our Self, our passions for commitments and our lust for love.

Our self is the soul. And the totality of reality is the song of the soul whose melody is change, polarity and love. Life is nothing but going through polarity; the two sides of a debate, the positive and the negative charges. Everything has two sides. The measure of our compassion and joy lies in our ability to navigate through this duality and these distractions while remaining united, open-hearted, and willing to share. These pressures and distractions are a constant feature of life. So how do we enjoy the circus of the soul without ruining it for ourselves and others? There is no trick to it. The answer lies in our relationship to our Infinite and finite selves and in our commitment to live consciously. It lies in the habits and lifestyle that we cultivate with each breath, in every day and in every encounter. It lies in the caliber and character we develop through the disciplines we practice and the challenges we meet.

Once we create a habit it creates us, and yet it is extremely difficult to cultivate promoting habits. What blocks our way? It's when we forget to develop our caliber, to consciously elevate and show our character.

Caliber promoting habits can be very small, like drinking enough water, to very large like doing a two and half hour sadhana in the early morning. They can be tangible, like eating a handful of nuts for good nutrition, to very subtle like creating a prayer, or moment of gratitude over your food as you prepare it and as you eat it. Each habit contributes to your capacity and caliber. Some will choose only habits that seem to help their immediate goals. others will gradually adopt a commitment to live with sensitivity, strength and soul.

Here are a few habits worth cultivating:

  1. The habit of time management.

  2. The habit to be still.

  3. The habit to listen deeply.

  4. The habit to measure our response to adverse circumstances and people so that we continually reflect our consciousness.

  5. The habit to let go, to cleanse and practice non-attachment.

  6. The habit to move gracefully, to use posture effectively, walk consciously, use pranayama and mantra to increase our vitality.

  7. The habit to relax fully, immediately and frequently.

  8. The habit to be conscious of our breath.

Attend to your infinite and finite selves with energy, grace, kindness, service and prosperity. And this will deliver your birthright - happiness.
