The Power of the Navel Point: How Stretch Pose Changed My Life

Who would have thought the belly could be so powerful, so important in the world of yoga?

When I first started practising Kundalini Yoga, I heard teachers talk about the navel point as the centre of personal power, courage, and will. It sounded inspiring, but if I'm honest, I didn't truly understand it.
Then came Stretch Pose.
Every day, I would lie on my back, lift my legs and shoulders off the floor, and stare at my toes while breathing a breath of fire. It seemed simple enough, yet within seconds I was shaking, sweating, and questioning every life decision that had brought me to that moment.
What surprised me most wasn't the physical challenge. It was the emotional reaction.
As I held the pose, waves of anger would surface. Frustration. Irritation. Resistance. Some days I felt annoyed before I had even begun. Other days, I wanted to quit halfway through. I couldn't understand why such a simple exercise could trigger such strong emotions.
And to make matters worse it was painful....a horrendous combo of irritability and sore abs. What on earth was I doing to myself?
Over time, I learned that the navel centre is about far more than abdominal strength. In Kundalini Yoga, the navel point is considered the seat of personal power, determination, confidence, and action. When we begin to work deeply with this area, we don't just strengthen muscles—we stir up everything that has been blocking our ability to stand fully in our own power.
For me, that meant facing buried frustration, self-doubt, and old patterns of hiding away when things became uncomfortable.
And Stretch Pose gave me nowhere to hide.
Every day, I had a choice. Drop the pose or stay. Complain or breathe. Quit or continue.
The transformation didn't happen overnight.
In fact, for weeks it felt as though I was getting more frustrated, not less. But something subtle was changing beneath the surface. The anger began to lose its grip. The resistance softened. I found myself staying in the pose longer, using the breath to help me, and recovering more quickly.
Then one day I realised that the emotions I had been battling were being replaced.
The anger became determination.
The frustration became resilience.
The self-doubt became self-belief.
The struggle became strength.
What emerged was a sense of courage that extended far beyond my yoga mat. I noticed myself speaking up more confidently. Making decisions more easily. Trusting myself. Taking action on things I had been postponing for years.
This is the true power of the navel point.
It is not about having strong abs or enduring discomfort for the sake of it. It is about building the inner fire that allows you to move through life's challenges with clarity and conviction. It is about developing the capacity to stay present when things become difficult instead of immediately retreating.
Many of us hold anger in our navel, and Stretch Pose or any Kriya involving the Nabhi (the area around the belly button) has the capacity to ignite all those latent moody embers and make us very irritable in our daily life. So prepare to be moody if you commit to daily Stretch pose (try 40 days). Embrace it and rather than getting exasperated by it and feeling like a "bad person", enjoy and relish the fury!
Today, Stretch Pose is still challenging. But my relationship with it has completely changed. What once felt like punishment now feels like a conversation with my own potential.
Whenever I practise, I am reminded that beneath anger lies energy. Beneath frustration lies power. Beneath resistance lies growth.
Sometimes the very thing we want to avoid is the doorway to the transformation we are seeking.
For me, that doorway was the navel point and the transformative technology of Kundalini Yoga
One word of warning..be aware of all this navel work making you extremely resilient, which can turn into stubborn rigidity. If you notice yourself feeling like some kind of Power Monster with a massive gap where your empathy and compassion used to be, balance out your navel with a heart-centred meditation after your Stretch Pose practice. This will soften the power of the navel with the devotion of the heart centre. One of my favourites is Meditation for a Calm Heart. Reach out if you want details on how to do Stretch Pose and Meditation for a Calm Heart.
The main thing to remember with navel power is, it will change your life and all these challenges and this "special pain" are so worth it! So keep going, love the process, and take it one day at a time.
If navel power resonates with you, I invite you to join me in weekly practice. One of the greatest gifts of practising in a supportive community is that you don't have to navigate the challenges alone. Some days you'll feel strong and motivated, and other days you'll need a little encouragement to stay the course. That's where I love to help.
